Deploy and Configure Mobility for Skype for Business Server
This article will walk you through the steps to configure an existing Skype for Business Server installation to use the Mobility service, allowing your mobile devices to be able to take advantage of Skype for Business Server Mobility features. Having reviewed the Plan for Mobility for Skype for Business Server article, you should be ready to proceed with the steps below to deploy Mobility into your Skype for Business Server environment. The steps are as follows and we're including in this table a permissions list :. All the following sections contain steps that assume you've read the Planning topic. If anything's confusing you, feel free to check out the information there. Users with legacy clients using MCX will need to upgrade to a current client. You may already have these as part of your Skype for Business Server environment, but you do need to create the following records for Autodiscovery to work:. An internal DNS record to support mobile users who're connecting from within your organization's network. An external or public DNS record to support mobile users who're connecting from outside your organization's network. These records can be either A host names or CNAME records you don't have to make both, we're just including the steps for everything here. In the left-hand pane of the console window, you'll need to go to the domain that's home to your Skype for Business Server's Front End Servers, and expand the Forward Lookup Zones there. In the Alias name textbox, type lyncdiscoverinternal for your host name, for the internal Autodiscover service URL. Click OK when this is entered. These steps are generic, because we can't tell what public DNS provider you might be using, but we still want to help you out. Now you should be able to enter an Alias Nameyou need to enter lyncdiscover here for the external Autodiscover service URL. You may need to save here, or if you need to create additional CNAME records in the forward lookup zone of each SIP domain in your Skype for Business Server environment, you should do that, but once you're ready, save your work. In the Name textbox, type lyncdiscoverinternal for your host name, for the internal Autodiscover service URL. To do this, repeat steps as many times as needed. Now you should be able to enter a Nameyou need to enter lyncdiscover here for the external Autodiscover service URL. You may need to save here, or if you need to create additional A or AAAA records in the forward lookup zone of each SIP domain for your Skype for Business Server environment, you should do that, but once you're ready, save your work. If you have questions about Planning around certificates, we've documented that in our Plan for Mobility for Skype for Business Server article. Once you've reviewed that, we'll walk you through the following:. First, you may need to check and see what certificates are in-place, and whether or not they have the entries you need. To do that, you'll need to log into your Skype for Business Server with an account that's a local Administrator. This account may also need to have rights to the issuing Certificate Authority CAfor some of these steps. Open the Skype for Business Server Management Shell you can use Search to find it if you don't have it pinned to your Start menu or task bar. It's going to be essential for you to know what certificates have been assigned before you try adding an updated certificate. So at the command, type:. The information from Step 3 will be unique to you. You need to look it over to determine if you have a single certificate that's been assigned for multiple things, or whether you have a different certificate assigned for the different components that need them. The Use parameter will tell you how a certificate's being used, and the Thumbprint parameter will tell you if it's all the same certificate, or multiple certs. If you have the SAN entries recommended in our Planning section, you're good. If not, you'll need to request a new certificate, or multiple certificates depending on your configuration from your Certificate Authority.
Skype for Business Mobility
At this point it is also prudent to declare that functionality differs depending on what OS your mobile device supports. In this article I am going to discuss the mobile application in general terms. The mobile app provides users with extended reach of their enterprise collaboration toolset beyond the boundaries of a corporate network or device. Traditionally, collaboration tools have been bound strictly within the corporate world, network and device and only extended outside with the use of VPN technology. As we know, VPN connectivity is not recommended for any real-time media data packets. So back in the days of LyncMicrosoft designed a mobile app that could leverage the external access methods Lync provided natively. This meant that users could be mobile and consume their Lync services from anywhere with a data connection Wifi or carrier 3G without the need for VPNs or other proprietary solutions. Great move. As the mobile application and the core of Lync improved, so did the functionality provided to users. There are some environmental variables that hamper the success and reliability of the mobile application. The mobile app, relies on the devices having a sufficient and stable connection to the internet i. Wifi, 3G, 4G etc. However, all these methods of connectivity have their own unique problems. These problems usually surround bandwidth and throughput. Wifi connection is the best form of connectivity for a mobile device, but the nature of how Wifi works, channel interference, obstacles, distance from the access point, number of devices connected to the access point etc. Not only this, but the same crutches Wifi has, is also true to mobile data networks but they are magnified. Taking this into consideration, means that the mobile app is flawed by the underlying technology it relies on to operate. So all we can expect from this app, is to perform as best as it can in the circumstances it finds itself in. So with this in mind, how can the application be used effectively by users? The app itself, is a good instant messaging tool and performs reasonably well when engaged in an instant message conversation. Being able to join Skype for Business meetings using one click join from your mobile is a welcome addition to the mobile app recently, combined with viewing content and PowerPoints rather than just being able to listen to the audio portion of the meeting makes the mobile app a powerful mobile collaboration tool. But beware, in the UK of the driving laws. Another massive benefit of the mobile application is the ability to update your call forwarding settings on the move. Perhaps you have just checked in to a hotel that has poor wifi, but has a room telephone. Update your forwarding settings to the room phone and in 2 minutes, you have all your incoming enterprise voice calls received on that phone. There are some exceptions. The main one being no support or application for Blackberry devices running Blackberry developed OS and a handful of Android devices that have the Tegra 2 Chipset installed. A list of all Tegra 2 chipset devices:. As with any Skype for Business role, feature and modality, there are dependencies and mobile applications are not immune to these. Each dependency will be discussed in a little detail shortly, but for a BOM, you need the following:. As with any Skype for Business modality, you need a Front end server. Without one, Skype for Business simply does not exist. Specific configuration of the Front End services is required in order to deploy mobility successfully. First and foremost, the mobile application is a web service dependent application. These web services can be viewed in IIS Management Console on the front end server under the external website. Three virtual directories are required to exist for mobile app support:. While the internal web services site listen on native TCP ports 80 and respectively.
